I saw this movie twice before purchasing it and it will be one of those inspirational movies I'll pull out and play every so often. Having been involved in sport all my life and having an association with American sports I understand the magnitude of the accomplicements of Jimmy Morris, so well played by Dennis Quaid and a good supporting cast including the high school athletes who pulled off their parts without seeming too "cheesey". The anguish of a family man leaving to chase a dream was well played and the additional behind-the-scenes footage makes this story all the more inspiring.

I feel that the Rookie is by far the best movie that I have ever seen. One cries with Quaid as he wrestles with his love of pitching and we feel the heart and soul that he puts into teaching and coaching, akin to the same "giving his all" to baseball. Quaid teaches all of us that true greatness isn't found in great success, but rather, in doing one's best at whatever task one is given to do. Quaid does this and is rewarded not only by success, but by the love and adulation of the many relationships that he has cultivated, even during the times when things weren't going so well for him!

i personally am not too much a fan of sport movies like this one, but this was a pretty memorable one due to the emotional nature of the film. it had more emotion in it than coach sport films like coach carter, which really made me like it more. dennis quaid is a great actor, both believable and inspirational in his role. a good watch for all those who are a bit older.

Wholesome determination makes for a film for the entire family to watch. A former minor league pitcher Jimmy Morris(Dennis Quaid)turns to teaching and coaching in Big Lake, Texas and bargains with his formerly hapless high school players that if they go to the state championships he will try out for the big leagues again. In 1999, Morris becomes the "Oldest Rookie" when he lands a job with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays as a 98 mph throwing lefty from the bullpen. Morris' dream is short, but sweet. And his story seems to have spawned from a Hollywood script. Although this is based on fact the movie could have been much better if filmed with a more "mature" approach. My favorite scene is where Morris is at the tryouts camp and he wipes his nose holding a soiled diaper. Also in the cast are Rachel Griffiths, Rick Gonzales, Russell Richardson and Blue Deckert.

A wonderfully warm and evocative family film. I really loved Dennis Quaid's down to earth portrayal in this real life story of a thirty five year old Texan local baseball coach who despite the odds managed to become one of the oldest rookies ever to play Major League baseball in the United States. Also starring Australian Rachel Griffiths as Quaid's supportive on-screen wife.
Leisurely paced but glowing with warmth. Lovely family viewing.

this is the semi enjoyabel tale of a man who used to be good at baseball, but lost strenght in his arm. a watchable tale due to the good plot and charactyer development. some enjoyabel scenes that are also heart warming abound in this drama for the whole family to enjoy. a pretty good watch for all to see.
