Cartoon Network's Adult Swim Robot Chicken, is made up of parody TV series that is similar to the comedy side of things such as Southpark in certain ways. Instead of using cartoon animation, co-created by Seth Green and filmmaker Matthew Senreich decided to go with action figures using stop motion animation. They poke fun at popular culture, which was pretty cool cause I could relate to a lot of the episodes. Every episode runs for about 10 to 13 minutes; at the beginning of each and every episode you will see a mad scientist strapping down a half chicken / terminator robot in a chair, who is forced to watch a wall of televisions containing these action figures shows. The effect of this is, we the viewer become the robot chicken, and we get a feeling of continuous viewing comedic pleasure from watching these commercial shows.
Using stop motion action figures would have to be a painful and long process, to me you would have to have a lot of patience to do this, which I wouldn't personally be able to handle so well myself. Robot Chicken is made up of a crew of 50 people who have also worked on other projects such as MTV's Celebrity Deathmatch. Most of the animation was done in post production to give the mouths and eyes movement a life like effect, which is kinda similar to the classic children's show Gumby back in the early 80's.
Every episode does have a few funny moments, which will get you bursting with laughter and other times it can seam rather dull and boring, I guess it depends on what you watched when growing up I suppose? But there are definitely some funny scenes in each and every episode, that do contain a lot of strong adult humor. For example the comedy sketch of Optimus Prime from the Transformers getting colon cancer would get any Transformers fan chuckling so hard; the guy doesn't even need a coffin, he transforms into one himself. I know that sounds lame, but its one of those shows you have to see it for yourself to know what I exactly mean.
Overall, Robot Chicken is a cool TV show that rocks, and now finally Madman Entertainment has released this awesome 2 disc DVD (region 4). For those of you who grew up in the 70's and 80's and were fans of watching TV shows such as Transformers, Voltron, He-Man, A Team, Care Bears and G I Joe, then you will understand this show a lot more than those who were born in the 90's. Some of the jokes are hilarious, and slowly go beyond the limits and bounds of traditional good taste adult humor. Other than that, Robot Chicken is the most darkest action figure stop motion fresh comedy sketches in television history, and comes highly recommended by us at www.dvdresurrections.com.
