August 1572 France is torn apart in bitter religious wars. Marguerite, known as Margot, is proud and beautiful; the Catholic sister of King Charles IX, she is forced to marry the Protestant Henri de Navarre in an effort to reconcile her native France.
Six days after the wedding, the infamous St Bartholomew's Day massacre takes place, encouraged by Margot's mother, the ruthless and scheming Catherine De Medici. Thousands of protestants are brutally murdered, but one of them, La Mole who is badly wounded, knocks on Margot's door in desperation. She takes him in and, for the first time in her life, she falls in love...with the enemy.

Unfortunately this movie wasn't as good as I thought it would be. I found the beginning really slow and a bit on the boring side so didn't bother watching it right through.

No one does period drama like the French - this is no exception. This is a melodramatic and blood thirsty epic of the St Bartholemew's day massacre between the catholics and protestants in 1572. There is no chivalry and honour, but swords drawn, spurting arteries and mayhem.
Catherine de Medici is evil personified as she crosses and double-crosses her children and co-horts. Isabell Adjani is the mesmerizingly beautiful Margot, a gifted actress but is distractingly popping out of her bodice in most scenes. Her brothers are sad and creepy. Daniel Auteuil is brilliant (as usual) as the future King Henri. Vincent Perez makes the most of a small but pivotal role, which helped launch his international career.
Destructive, dark and utterly compelling.

August 1572 - France is torn apart in bitter religious wars. Marguerite, known as Margot, is proud and beautiful; the Catholic sister of King Charles IX, she is forced to marry the Protestant Henri de Navarre in an effort to reconcile her native France. Tortuously convoluted historial epic with disturbing characters and violent revelations. A bit heavy going in places.
