Prime Suspect is a tense, uncompromising drama by distinguished dramatist and novelist Lynda La Plante. This gritty benchmark crime series stars Oscar, Emmy & Golden Globe Award Winner Helen Mirren as the formidable Detective Jane Tennison. A skilled, tough and determined top class detective, Tennison proves more than a match against criminals and colleagues alike.
This is a brilliant series written by Lynda la Plante (apart for the 2nd series). She consulted heavily with a female detective chief inspector (DCI) & that woman says that most of the things that happen in the series & to Helen Mirren's character (Jane Tennyson), actually happened to her. This realism really shows - most of the gritty cop shows & forensic (CSI) based type shows made in more recent times, would have there beginnings here, I suspect. Apparently, when it was originally airing in UK in the 90's & 2000's, most of the country stayed in to watch. It was a phenomenon! Prime Suspect was voted 68th in the list of 100 Greatest British Television Programmes as compiled by a poll given by the British Film Institute. I'd watch anything with Helen Mirren, but she is particularly great in this series. I just totally believed that she was a boss cop in a predominently man's world, paving a way for others to follow. But essentially, Jane Tennyson is a great cop, who figures it out & eventually nabs the bad guy, one way or another! Believable script - people aren't cracking funny one liners every 2 seconds, or not being affected by the gruesome aspects of life they are confronted with. They are affected & they show it. Watch the special features first if possible - gives you some extra insight for what follows.
Helen Mirren is all class, and in this box set you can see all the proof you need as she firstly invents, and then develops over a sustained period the character of Jane Tennison. The scripts are just as good (this being British tv they take their time and let the tension build), and the cases themselves are always just as compelling as the characters. Superb stuff.
This is a fantastic series, extremely well adcted, great script and plotlines, brilliant casting. Highly realistic, plotlines that do not leave you scratching your head because they don't make sense or have holes you could drive a mack truck through. Love Helen Mirren generally and adore her in this series, highly recommended, not for the kids though. Translates well into modern times even though it is a little on the old side now.
