porco rosso is reputed to be an autobiographical movie by miyazaki. whether you think so or not, this movie is slightly different to his other fantasies in that it definitely has a more adult slant to it. unlike his other movies the hero and heroine are adults; despite porco being a fantastical pig character, the setting is clearly in the mediterranean italy and the timeline is clear...an interesting note - the wartime march played in this movie is the same in his later movie, howls moving castle.

Porco Rosso (Kurenai no Buta) is another Japanese animation from Studio Ghibli. It is a little different to previous offerings such as the 1988 "My Neighbour Totoro" or 1986 "Laputa: Castle in the Sky" but is still sure to delight Ghibli / anime fans.

While this film is a little older than say Spirited Away or Howl's Moving Castle, Porco Rosso is still up to the standard of these two films. The animation is very good, as you would expect from miyazaki, and the voice acting is top notch.
While the story itself has some adult themes its all presented in a very innocent manner and is suitable for young and old alike.
Highly recommended.
