Unlocked from the imagination of one of the world's most original directors, Pan's Labyrinth is a gothic fairytale twist on Alice in Wonderland and The Changeling. Set against the bloody back-drop of the Spanish civil war, 10 year old Ofelia is sent to an isolated mansion with her heavily pregnant mother. Lonely and intimidated by her new stepfather, Ofelia discovers an overgrown labyrinth where she meets Pan, an ancient satyr. Fascinated by fairy tales, Ofelia is captivated by Pan and his stories of the fairy world. However, when her mother falls ill Ofelia makes a pact with Pan in order to save her. In exchange, Ofelia must undertake three challenges to prove her worth. These challenges take her on a journey to another world where she must use her wit and guile to overcome the creatures that lurk beneath.
Synopsis
Winner of Three Academy Awards (Cinematography, Art Direction & Make-Up)Visually stunning and brimming with endearingly warm characters, Pan's Labyrinth tells the beautiful tale of an imaginative 10-year-old and her incredible ability to escape reality using her mind. In a similar tradition to The Chronicles of Narnia and The Labyrinth, yet with significantly more emphasis on the gothic/horror aesthetic, the film takes us to a place of dark imagery and dangerous fantasy, similar to worlds created by the master of the macabre, Tim Burton. We've all sat at the window, staring and dreaming of a mythical world of wonderful, sometimes menacing creatures. Pan's Labyrinth, with its lifelike costumes and unbelievable characters, takes us as close as many of us will ever go. Set in Spain in 1944, 10-year-old Ophelia moves with her pregnant mother Carmen, to the province of Navarra to meet her new stepfather, the Fascist officer Captain Vidal. In a world torn apart by war, the only escape for a 10-year-old girl is her imagination. Ophelia stumbles across a stone labyrinth in the garden of her new estate, which is presided over by the faun Pan. Pan convinces Ophelia she is the lost queen of this land, and in order to regain her throne she must complete three dangerous tasks before the next full moon. While Ophelia struggles to regain her rightful place in Pan's Labyrinth, the political struggle in Spain rages on, and the world in Ophelia's imagination comes closer to the brutal and bloody reality she is trying to escape. The dark, gothic-esque aesthetic of Pan's Labyrinth has earned the film a place among other genre classics. Directed by Guillermo Del Toro (Hellboy, Blade 2), who brings his previous experience in the macabre, the film blends fantasy, horror and drama seamlessly in a brutal and bloody postmodernist depiction of the childhood fantasy film. Nominated for the Golden Palm at this year's Cannes Film Festival, Pan's Labyrinth is a critically acclaimed portrayal of just how powerful, and potentially dangerous, the imagination can be.Starring Ivana Baquero (Romasanta: The Werewolf Hunt), Doug Jones (Adaptation, Hellboy), Sergi Lopez (Harry Is Here to Help, A Pornographic Affair) and directed by Guillermo Del Toro (Blade 2, Hellboy)

A mystical fairytail full of magic and whimsy and wonder and bloodshed. A grown up fariytail that's visually stunning- well written and beautifully crafted in all cinematic aspects. Set in Spain during the civil war- i think- a girl named Ophelia who loves reading tales about fairies and cupcakes coated with magic dust and all of that jazz goes to live with her new father. A ruthless dictator type. Her mother is heavily pregnant and her new house is huge and surrounded by a forest- a magical one.
After finding her way through an ancient labyrinth she is confronted with a chance to regain a part of herself ad her birth father. With some brilliant acting, spectacular effects and some truely frightening, yet poignant, scenes Pans Labyrinth remains in your head forever.
One of the best movies i have ever seen and a movie that is amazing from start to finish. Not for the faint hearted though- there are some very scary, brutal and bloody scenes, the fact that the story is so innocent makes it all the more chilling and brilliant. One of the best movies in the last ten years and I mean that.
Genius!!!!!!!!!

this movie is amazing, and defintely worth a watch. the story of a young girl called ophelia in war torn country with her
mother who has remarried a general in the army, who turns out to be a cruel and controlling man who turns ophelia's world upside down. so ophelia creates a world of her own. a world of fantasy and magic but also of evil. it is an great movie with amazing graphics and characters, with twists and turns you dont expect. it is made in spanish but is subbed in english, which usually i find hard to follow but not in this movie you get hooked straight away and believe me you forget about the subtitles.

this movie is totally fantastic!! I enjoyed the parallel storylines (that of Ophelias tasks and that of the rebels), and especially the fantasy elements. Those of you who would be put off because it seems a childish fantasy, don't be, as its not like that at all, it is truly a beautiful story. Well worth the time taken to watch it.

this is an amazing movie, and not a kids one. you become very invested in the characters and what will become of them. i though that the movie would have spent more time on the fantasy aspect then it does and i was really looking forward to that aspect, but that doesnt matter in the end because you invest in the lives of the people on screen
