A woman named Grace retires with her two children to a mansion on Jersey, towards the end of the Second World War, where she's waiting for her husband to come back from battle. The children have a disease which means they cannot be touched by direct sunlight without being hurt in some way. They will live alone there with oppressive, strange and almost religious rules, until she needs to hire a group of servants for them. Their arrival will accidentally begin to break the rules with unexpected consequences.
i seem to recall this movie was released at the height of nicole kidman's popularity (ie in the course of about a year after her divorce from tom cruise), and i personally think it is really overrated. it is creepy, yes, but for most of it is a rather mediorche thing and the only thing that redeems it is the spectacular ending (i remember being half asleep for most of it and as soon as i realised what the whole thing was about i started shivering)
I dont think that creepy really existed until I saw this movie - ok I am exaggerating but this movie gave me the heebie jeebies. There is something about a small family with no male role model or father moving into a big scary house that really creeps me out. The children become possessed and ghosts are trying to pull apart the family. It is well done.
Overall this film was very well done and for a change had some intelligence built-in. There were minimal if any plot holes or "silliness" which you always seem to get with horror movies these days. Its refreshing to see so much effort spent on settings as well.... that house is about as creepy as you can get!
Definitely worth a watch and possibly worth buying if you're into the genre.
this was a pretty good movie, good if you do not always look for things like plot twists, as the ending will take you by suprise. this film was a bit boring in some parts, i got sick of the kids more than once, as they were a bit silent and weird. there were some genuinely scary scenes in here, but it mostly just relied on giving frights, which i didnt like.
I’m one of those people who never works out the plot in advance and just watches the movie until all is reveals. This one really kept me in the dark. It have creep factor as well as a genuine knack for getting me really curious about what was going on. Nicole Kidman was really good in the role – it seemed to be made for her and as for the kids, they acted really well. That little boy played the part of being stressed throughout the show perfectly. A really good movie.
I know this has received a lot of good reviews and praise but this wasn't a very entertaining movie for me. Basically Nicole Kidman's character and her two children are in a large mansion-style house in the Channel Islands set in the time World War II, and they are under the impression that there are other people in the house with them (possibly ghosts) but can't be sure. The movie follows this premise for the whole length but moves very slowly through the plot and the viewer is sitting there constantly waiting for something to happen without much success. It's almost as if too much suspense is used in this movie. Finally when the ending comes you feel a bit cheated and wonder whether this conclusion couldn't have been reached about an hour earlier. Still, the movie itself is fairly well produced and has a very eerie feeling to it throughout the duration.
Now this ia a good thriller. i really loved this movie. Everything about it was good, from the setting, to the actors to the amazing storyine!! its a definate ten out of ten for me, i recommend this to everyone who loves a good thriller with a wicked story lline, A++++++, this is a must have for any good dvd collection.
i love the setting for this movie, and i thought this movie was ruddy brilliant. though not all that scary, it is definitely a thriller and though i dont like whats her name again..nicole kidman all that much, i thought her acting was really good. and i never really suspected much until the end.
I found this movie more of a weird one the scary, weird isn't bad though. The main character is strange and the ending was not what I was expecting which is whhy I really like this movie. It's worth the watch, even if it isn't that scary still a good movie.
