A train, traveling gently through the rolling hills of the Italian countryside, explodes. In one marriage there are four survivors: The General, an elderly English gentleman, Werner, a young German, Aimee, an orphaned eight-year old girl and Emily Delahunty, an English novelist who invites them to her home to recuperate. Thrown together by misfortune, they find themselves attempting to rework the torn fabric of their lives, while a concerned police inspector attempts to piece together the events that bought them there. When Aimees straight-laced American uncle arrives to take her away, it shakes an already delicate household to the core. Will the magic of Emilys house in Umbria bring happiness to all? Or will happiness prove as elusive as the answers to questions that bind them together?

A beautiful and heartwarming film based on the bestselling book of the same name. The story starts with the lonely and outwardly proper Mrs Emily Delahunty[ played by acclaimed British actress Maggie Smith], an English writer residing in a beautiful villa in Italy. One day while travelling on a train to Milan, she manages to befriend a young American girl, Aimee [played by Emily Clarke]. When the train is rocked by a huge explosion, the only survivors are Emily Delahunty, the young Aimee and two other people. Mrs Delahunty takes the traumatised survivors back to live with her at her villa where they eventually evolve into a close family unit until the arrival of Aimee's uncle to claim her back.
A lovely, evocative movie which won Maggie Smith huge accolades for her central role as Emily Delahunty.
The wonderful Maggie Smith essentially plays herself here - or a role she could play in her sleep, an eccentric romance novelist whose house becomes a refuge for a group of people who survive a terrorist attack on a train. Some interesting characters and a sedate quality that allows the plot to meander along make it quite an appealing movie.
