The body of a young woman is found in a ditch in the woods of the small California coastal town of San Benito. SANDRA BULLOCK ("Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood," "Miss Congeniality"), stars as Cassie Mayweather, the seasoned homicide detective and crime scene specialist assigned to the case along with her new partner San Kennedy (BEN CHAPLIN - "Lost Souls," "The Thin Red Line"). The two dectectives make their way through microscopic hints of evidence, which seem to indicate a random act of violence, but Cassie has a gut feeling that there is more to this murder than meets the eye. Something about this case reminds her of her past exactly at a time when she is asked to appear at a parole hearing on an old police matter. These events force Cassie to revisit the past.

Murder By Numbers is a psychological suspense-thriller that tells the story of a tenacious homicide detective, Cassie Mayweather (Sandra Bullock) and her new partner Sam Kennedy (Ben Chaplin) who become pitted against two malevolently brilliant young men (Ryan Gosling and Michael Pitt) in an ingenious battle of wits as they try to solve a murder case.
I dont know about this one, the story line is interesting, the story based on Leopold and Loebe in the 1920s, the casting would seem right but somethng just wasnt there that needed to be in order for this movie to be fantastic. Sandra Bullock has done better work, but even the supporting actors didnt even seem all there. Mundane mightbe the way to describe it.
Sandra Bullock does a great job of playing a detective looking for a murderer. The clues are a bit to neat to suit her and she begins to look deeper. This movie was borderline Hitchcock style murder mystery and very smoothly done. Just a little stronger acting by Ben Chaplin and Ryan Gosling and it would have been a major hit. They do a good job but they are not the caliber of Ed Norton in "Primal Fear". If they were they would have got at least oscar nominations if not awards. I still think they turn in fine performances and were not appreciated. I personally think the whole movie was underrated. I think it improves with additional viewings. You begin to truly appreciate the performances and the story. A Hitchcock air about it that makes you think of "The Rope" and "Vertigo". I bought the DVD and I recommend it. Most fans of movies like "Kiss the Girls" and "Along Came a Spider" will enjoy it.
I enjoyed this movie, but agree with the other reviewers about Sandra Bullock. Although she does an alright job, it is almost hard to take her seriously, and i find her to be quite annoying. A bit of a creepy movie, but its well - done when you discover how the two boys have committed the murder. Not a bad film, especially if you like thrillers. A cheap price as well.
umm i really odnt know what to think of this film! i liked in ways but then really hated it in other ways. i would have to give it jsut a five out of tne becuas eof this it just left me feeling disapointed. Sandra B just did not do her usaully fantastic job in this film
This movie was quite a disappointment in my opinion. The standard of acting in this movie was well below what we have all come to expect from popular actress Sandra Bullock. Her role as a homicide detective in this film is not convincing which spoilt the whole movie for me as it just seemed too unbelievable.
Sandra Bullock is unconvincing as homicide detective Cassie Mayweather in this 2002 action/ psychological thriller. A lot of screen time is given to the two gifted high school murderers - which always appears flat. Based on the Leopold & Loeb case of the 1920s, it is a fairly tedious affair, with little chemistry between the two leads (Bullock & Ben Chaplin) and a plodding storyline.
this movie for me is very trite. but at the same time it has some great performances by the two killers. sandra bullock is never really good at playing serious characters or strong characters as her strong character becomes more mean then actually strong and because of that you find it really hard to empathise with her, an ok movie but not the greatest thing since sliced bread.
Sandra Bullock stars in this thriller a detective with a disturbing past who is investigating a murder by a duo who believe they are too smart to get caught. Interesting story backed up by a good cast although Sandra Bullock unfortunately seems to play each role exactly the same as the last.
