In the wake of a painful estrangement from his daughter, boxing trainer Frankie Dunn has been unwilling to let himself get close to anyone for a very long time--then Maggie Fitzgerald walks into his gym. In a life of constant struggle, Maggie's gotten herself this far on raw talent, unshakable focus and a tremendous force of will. But more than anything, she wants someone to believe in her. The last thing Frankie needs is that kind of responsibility-- let alone that kind of risk--but won over by Maggie's sheer determination, he begrudgingly agrees to take her on. In turns exasperating and inspiring each other, the two come to discover that they share a common spirit that transcends the pain and loss of their pasts, and they find in each other a sense of family they lost long ago. Yet, they both face a battle that will demand more heart and courage than any they've ever known.

I find this film to be terribly overrated. It is frequently simplistically emotional and sappy, to the point of ludicrousness. Structurally it could have been much tighter, and drags often. Far from a cohesive narrative, the plot seems is split into sections which sometimes seem unrelated to what has come before. The twist is jarring and discontinuous. The whole movie seems self-consciously serious, as if it is aware of its own lack of credibility. Nevertheless, it is a simple, accessible plot, and could provide an entertaining evening of movie watching. Certainly not the gem that it is credited to be, however.
Maggie Fitzgerald, a poor thirty-one year old waitress from the very lower classes and with a dysfunctional loser family, decides to make a difference through boxing. She convinces the experienced hardened boxing trainer Frankie Dunn to coach her and be her manager, with the support of his old partner Eddie Scrap-Iron Dupris, who sees her potential as a boxer. Frankie has a problematical relationship with his daughter, and practically adopts Maggie along her career.
this is such an epic movie! man its just so so sad though, i made the fatal mistake of watching it at the movies, and it was so embarassing leaving, becasue my eyes were all red from crying. but if you watch this then you will find that it is just impossible not to be sad because you grow so attached to the characters and want them to succeed. amazing acting from everyone involved, esp clint eastwood, what a legend!
this is one of my favourite movies of all time. the acting is superb and its not every day that you actually find actors that are *that* good at acting heartbreak and death. eastwood and freeman just get better and better as they get older and this was the first time that swank really made an impression on me. no wonder it got so many awards!
Well one thing that I’ll say about Clint Eastwood is that he acts well and pretty much without effort. The movie starts off very well, inspiration stuff all the things that an audience loves. It takes a bit of a twist that does end with a depressive note – something that Eastwood seems to be dabbling a bit with. I’m not the biggest fan of this but there’s no arguing with the fact that he does what he does well.
This movie would have gotten a perfect score if not for being so incredibly depressing. People die, dreams are crushed and by the end of the movie there is little, if any, hope for anyone in the film.
That said everything else about the film is great but its so determined to bring you down at the end that it takes some of the shine away fromt he rest of the film.
Million Dollar Baby is a difficult movie. ITs quite gruelling and very challenging. Full marks must go to Clint Eastwood though for his sensitive direction and his brilliant performance. He is well matched by Hilary Swank. There is however something that makes it hard to really like the movie. Its powerful, provocative and it looks great but its tough going.
I love this film. I had just been experiencing all of Eastwoods Westerns, including Unforgiven which also won 4 oscars and starred Eastwood and Morgan Freeman no less, and i heard about a new movie showing at the theatres. So i went and saw it and was blown away. This is also from the writer of Crash who has now won best screenplay and best film oscars 2 years in a row. Well done buddy
I found this movie to be very disappointing.
Far too blatantly emotionally manipulative, through plot, music and plodding (supposedly meaning filled) dialogue.
Really very surprised at the amount of critical accliam heaped upon this movie. The largely ignored "Cinderalla Man" with Russel Crowe is much better.
