Olive is a little girl with a dream: winning the Little Miss Sunshine contest. Her family wants her dream to come true, but they are so burdened with their own quirks, neuroses, and problems that they can barely make it through a day without some disaster befalling them. Olive's father Richard is a flop as a motivational speaker, and is barely on speaking terms with her mother. Her uncle Frank, a renowned Proust scholar, has attempted suicide following an unsuccessful romance with a male graduate student. Her brother Dwayne, a fanatical follower of Nietzsche, has taken a vow of silence, which allows him to escape somewhat from the family whose very presence torments him. And Olive's grandfather is a ne'er-do-well with a drug habit, but at least he enthusiastically coaches Olive in her contest talent routine. Circumstances conspire to put the entire family on the road together with the goal of getting Olive to the Little Miss Sunshine contest in far off California.
Synopsis
Take a hilarious ride with the Hoovers, one of the most endearingly fractured families in comedy history. Father Richard (Greg Kinnear) is desperately trying to sell his motivational success program... with no success. Meanwhile, "pro-honest" mom Sheryl (Toni Collette) lends support to her eccentric family, including her depressed brother (Steve Carrell), fresh out of the hospital after being jilted by his lover. Then there are the younger Hoovers - the seven-year-old, would-be beauty queen Olive (Abigail Breslin) and Dwayne (Paul Dano), a Nietzsche-reading teen who has taken a vow of silence. Topping off the family is the foul-mouthed grandfather (Alan Arkin), whose outrageous behavior recently got him evicted from his retirement home. When Olive is invited to compete in the "Little Miss Sunshine" pageant in far-off California, the family piles into their rusted-out VW bus to rally behind her - with riotously funny results.

Can't understand why anyone would not find the movie funny. Guess that if you want big hollywood movies with beautiful people with lots of bling then this isn't the movie for you. The jokes will go over your head. It is called deadpan humour. It just got funnier and funnier and I was in tears of laughter at the end.
Loved this movie, very heartfelt and real, compared to the plastic wonders of today. But also crazy and witty at the same time. Yes I had a few tears, ok I admit it. Would watch it again for sure.
This movie received amazing hype and accolades which I don't believe it really lives up to. It has its funny and feel good moments but I just don't think it is really too entertaining. There is one reason you should see this film however and that is for Steve Carrell's performance which is amazing. He tones down his normal eccentric persona and delivers an awesome performance as a gay depressed scholar. I recommend seeing this film but don't get your hopes up for an amazing film.
This movie was really good and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I especially liked her dance at the end. It was really cute and weird but I won't spoil it for the people who haven't watched it yet. Overall its a good family film with its ups and downs. I recommend that you at least watch it once.
I greatly enjoyed this film. It was so in depth and the detail was fantastic. Great for the entire family! Even if your not sure about it at first, just have a look and you are sure to enjoy it. Definitely one of the best movies of all time. I just loved it. it was so fantastically fantastic. highly recommended. yes i enjoyed this very much, and i think that everyone should check it out! fabulous, i give it 5 stars.
This movie is different to most, but it is very clever. It is about a very dysfunctional family, they have their depressed uncle staying with them, the son is taking a vow of silence and the daughter is a chubby little seven year old who wants to be a model. It is funny and witty and a good watch for the whole family.
this movie is soo cool. it is hilarious and inspiring. a very good plot and storyline. a wonderful cast was picked for little miss sunshine and it is not a movie that would be easily forgotten. i enjoyed this film very much and i definately watcch it over and over again. i cant rave about this movie any more! just a brilliant good quality movie. truely great and i would reccommend this for all!
Quite a funny movie. Good acting all around and a nice light yet strangely deep tale of a family going about their quirky things as they go on their way to a beauty pageant for a 10 year old. The plot is rambling and the conversation and lines are not too over the top. This is part of the appeal, it just cruises along and you get the idea that this family has struggled a lot yet maintains a sense of strength, understated though it is. Overall, I’d recommend this movie for a good laugh and watch.
One of the better movies that have coem out into day's time.
It is based on a family that justs gets by. It is a movie that is very easy to relate to.
Olive my according to the back be the main character - but that's not true, all of the family are main character in their own rights. The "Winner" dad, Down to earth mum,The Silent brother, The drugie grandfather, homosexual Uncle. Looks like Olive has a housefull of trouble!
Well acted and well cast. Really liked the movie.
