Welcome to the Court of Louis XVI in the fabulous Palace of Versailles, France. Outside the gates, the peasants are on the verge of revolting (already well past disgusting), whilst inside, the aristocracy are gossiping, conspiring and powdering. At the centre of all the decadent intrigue are the Comtesse de Vache (Jennifer Saunders) and her all-knowing maid Lisette (Dawn French). In their own inimitable, irreverent style, our devious duo stir up half a dozen hilarious helpings of historic hysterics and heinous hairdos.

"Let them eat cake." A famous line supposedly uttered by Marie Antoinette.
BUT DID SHE ACTUALLY SAY IT?
Well, all is revealed in this hilarious 6-episode Britcom starring the wonderfully talented Jennifer Saunders as the idiotic Comtesse Colombine de Vache, her faithful yet crafty servant, Lisette, played by Dawn French, and Adrian Scarborough, as the brilliantly gay couturier, Bouffant.
"Let Them Eat Cake" is set in the Palace of Versailles in the 18th century under the reign of King Louis XVI and his Queen Consort Marie Antoinette. Amidst trysts, lies, murders and conspiracies, the riotous laughs are aplenty when Colombine's days are spent playing one-upmanship against her scheming nemesis Madame de Plonge, sucking up to the Queen, and forcing her ever-expanding waistline into the clutches of her unforgiving corset. With her sidekicks, Lisette and Bouffant, united and divided they tackle one crisis after another with as much grace and dignity as their gargantuan wigs can allow.
Memorable Quotes:
[Upon Bouffant's suggestion of informing the authorities after discovering the body of the Marquise de Foufou chopped up into '14-ish pieces']
COMTESSE:
"What do you want me to do about her, Monsieur? Put her back together?! Compared to what she used to look like, this is the equivalent of a makeover!"
[While squeezing into one of her frocks designed by her couturier, Bouffant]
COMTESSE:
"Is this a dress or a contraceptive, Monsieur!"
Another French and Saunders series that shocks and makes you laugh. In the French court there is intrigue and sex, and lots of them. See how things really were back in the good old days. Dawn French is the servant and Jennifer Saunders is her rich mistress but it's Dawn who has the best lines and the best time in this romp.
If you are a fan of french and saunders then you have to seethis dvd. it isnt as goos as some of their other stuff, but it is still the classic comedy that they do so well. it is a type of period comedy that hasnt really been done much of late. these women are a great team and it shows in this dvd.
