Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's Jesus Christ Superstar first exploded onto the West End stage in 1971 and it was clear that the musical world would never be the same again. For the first time ever, Jesus Christ Superstar has been specially filmed for video. Shot at Pinewood Studios, this brand new filmed stage version starring Glenn Carter and Rik Mayall captures one of the best scores Andrew Lloyd Webber has ever written and is packed with hit songs including 'I Don't Know How To Love Him', 'Gethsemane' and 'Superstar'.

The YouTube link uploaded for this DVD is not the correct version. The one for sale is Rik Mayall's version, this is Ted Neeley's (the better version if you ask me). Just letting you know as I would be gutted to buy this and find out its not the one I had thought.
The newest version of JCS differs from the original in that it recreates what a modern audience might expect to see in the theatre today, using a fixed set (as opposed to the original Ted Neely version, which was filmed on location). This particular production also benefits from vastly improved sound and visual quality, and for me, the highlight cameo perfomance by Rick Mayall, of the Young Ones. I find that although overall I prefer this version of JCS for its cleaner lines and extremely talented cast, it won't replace the original in my collection. Buy both! That way you can enjoy just how truely great this history-changing musical can be across the decades.
An amazing musical! JCS totally revamped for the new era contains amazing music and some extremely talented singers/actors. Glenn Cater, Jérôme Pradon and Renee Castle are all extremely talented and the music is stunning. Just like a stage musical but allowing you to see from all around the set. A must watch for ALW and original JCS fans!
The Passion of Jesus Christ as seen through the eyes of Judas. This popular rock musical is based on the 1996 London/2000 Broadway revivals of the show, directed by Gale Edwards. Re-orchestrated and set to modern times, it is not the Superstar of the 70's but rather one for the 21st Century.
The religeous rock n roll musical of the 70s is back with all new cast and a fresh modern taste
This version of Superstar isn't too bad, in fact it's quite wonderful. It was very engaging, and though you have to put up with the usual bad stage-to-screen adaptations, it still captured a lot of the power of the original. The guy who plays Jesus is excellent, as is Judas, and I got very swept up in the story and had tears in my eyes by the end.
