Having been invalided out of the Boer War, Paul Craddock buys Shallowford, a manor house and estate in Devon, with money from his late father's scrap-yard business. He soon becomes a much-respected "Squire" who is determined to treat all his tenant farmers fairly, unlike his predecessor.

As good as the book by Ronnie Delderfield I looked forward to this DVD although I had not seen the programme since the 1970's all I could remember was that I enjoyed it and again I have not been disappointed. Good production, good actors and a decent script. The setting is ideal - as near again to the books setting and details. Almost a snapshot of a way of life that no longer exists like the book.
I would recommend these DVDS to anyone who enjoys BBC type dramas made from classic books. Ronnie Delderfield was cleaver with his characters, settings and working in the social changes of the time, suffragettes, changing class system in England post WW1/ Boer War, the effect of industrialisation on agriculture and small country communities and perhaps that not all progress is really progress at all.
