A great mix of comedy with suspenseful horror makes this work really well. Michael J Fox is a man whose wife has just been murdered and is a major suspect. He can also see dead people and tries to get to the bottom of who really killed his wife. The script is fun and original, the story mostly light hearted but can have the occasional moment of suspense to it.

Frank Bannister is a man who goes around town claiming that he can talk with and see ghosts, though while he can, some believe (though he is, in fact) a common con-man who gets ghosts to make it appear though there is a haunting in whichever house is chosen, wherein he sweeps into action and pretends to remove the ghosts. All this goes on until one day strange deaths start occurring all throughout town and Frank ponders this, while his love interest, Lucy Lynskey, whose husband had only just died of the same cause, goes to the house of a deranged old woman who keeps her grown-up daughter locked up, saying that it is for the good of everyone else. Soon, it is revealed that even the ghosts themselves can see the force that is killing everyone off; a deceased mass murderer come back from Hell itself to continue killing. It is therefore up to Frank, Lucy, as well as two ghosts, to find out how to end the fiendish ghost from killing any more, while all the while trying to shake off a deranged detective from arresting them both. Very Good

When I first bought this, I decided to watch it snuggled up in bed on a dark night. At first I thought, what was I thinking? But as the movie progressed, I just settled down to enjoy a truly excellent film. Michael J. Fox is one of my favourite actors and he does not let me down in this fresh and original story. Frank Bannister (Fox) is a ghost hunter who performs ridiculous exoricisms to evict the evil spirits that inhabit the houses of Fairwater. But he need not fear. The ghosts are his friends, they live with him, they joke with him and if they could, they'd eat with him. But when Frank starts seeing a figure in a cape, he begins to wonder if maybe he does have something to fear. "Death" is on a murderous rampage and Frank must stop him and try to clear his own name before it is too late.
Peter Jackson expertly directs this wonderful movie, and it is a must.

Practically bashed by critics everywhere when released in 1996, the Frighteners can be appreciated today as an underrated gem. After crafting a landmark gorefest with Dead Alive and scoring a hit among critics with Heavenly Creatures, future Lord of the Rings trilogy director Peter Jackson directed this wildly inventive and surprisingly innovative film starring Michael J. Fox as a psychic investigator who, with the help of three ghost pals, runs a phony ghost busting business. Soon enough, people are getting picked off by Death himself, and it's up to Fox to find out what's really going on. So much is going on in the Frighteners that it's easy for the film to become incoherent, but it's exciting visuals and special effects, along with the performance of Fox and the energetic direction of Jackson, make this film a surprise gem that should be (and very well may be) a cult classic.

Michael J Fox makes great movies and this is one of the more under-rated movies of the horror/comedy genre. Great soundtrack and story which is given a real presence because of Fox who performs his part of a charlatan turned honest with finesse and charm. The special effects are a bit dodgy when compared to modern day big budget stuff but don’t detract from the movie at all.

Ok it has ghosts and a supernatural feel but it is not scarey, it is lots of fun, a bit disney, but great effects, some laughs and a fun story, michael is great as always. this is a good rainy sunday afternoon movie. While not a horror it is still worth a watch for fun and a laugh instead.

In Australia this movie was delayed from release because the bad guy in it looked slightly similar to a man who had recently murdered a group of people at a holiday destination.Peter Jackson was very sympathetic to the people and gave it 6 months more before it was released.
The movie in its self wasn't too bad but it wasn't too good either more of a comedy than a horror though. At the end it kind of drags on a bit too long, you start thinking that this movie will just hurry up and bloody finish.
