30 years ago, one film showed us the face of pure evil and changed the way we see horror films forever. William Friedkin's masterpiece is still the film against which all horror films are judged.
Now acclaimed Director Renny Harlin (Driven, Deep Blue Sea) has created a companion prequel that takes us back to the origins of sheer evil.
In the original Exorcist, while ministering to the Devil's assault on 12 year old Regan, the aged Father Merrin mentions once performing an exorcism in Africa when he was a young man - this is the story of that encounter with The Fallen One.
It is post World War II and Merrin has been sent to Turkana where a bizarre Byzantine Church has been unearthed in the middle of the desert. Something has been stirred in the cavernous pits below the surface, first sending the local tribesmen insane, then gripping all who venture near. Chaos, atrocity and possession have been unleashed. In the place where Evil was born, Merrin will, for the first time, see its true face.

In 1949, in Cairo, Egypt, the archaeologist and former priest Merrin (Stellan SkarsgÄrd) has a meeting with Semelier (Ben Cross), the representative of a millionaire that is interested in an antique piece hidden in a circa 5 A.D. buried Christian church discovered in East of Africa in a British colony. Merrin lost the faith in God in the WWII, when he was obliged to select ten victims for a Nazi officer, and accepts the work. Together with the Catholic Father Francis (James D'Arcy), assigned by the Vatican to investigate how a church could be mysteriously built in a place 1,500 years before the records of the first church in the area, they travel to the spot with the authorization of the British command. They meet with Dr. Sarah (Izabella Scorupco), a woman that was brutalized by the Nazis in the war that is responsible for the local hospital, and while investigating, they realized that the church was built to protect the area against an evil force, which has been released along the excavations. Father Merrin has to return to his path of "Man of God" to fight against evil.
Meh what is with prequels? If you can't use your imagination or the story is that lacking in the original then what's the point of making an entire movie concerning events which lead to the original/s.
Exorcist the beginning was shocking and dragged on. This movie could not finish quick enough for my likings. Boring from start to finish.
this movie had its moments. it was a bit more complex than the other exorcist movies and i found that good. it had more questiosn that need answering and that made me more intrigued. I enjoyed it. It wasn't to over the top and could give some peopel a realy good scare for me it was just nice watching it.
this is a really crazy movie! it either had me going what the hell?! or laughing at the weird scenes. it has a bit more to understand than some of the others, so in that respect it was different to the other ones. this one is good to watch if you want to understand a bit more about the whole series, and also want a bit of a laugh
The Exorcist: The Beginning funny, scary and sickening (for some, not me) this movies got it all I cracked up a few times throughout it, some minor stuff ups including when a guy loading a double barrel shotgun, with two cartridges shoots it three times at the invading hyenas. But what the possessed woman says and how she says it, will make you wet yourself with laughter. Not for the whole family but still great!
This movie started out to be a very serious movie, then it got weirder and weirder and at the end I was really shocked. They had turned this serious (not scary) horror into something you would find from one of the scary movies. I couldn't stop laughing because it was such a shock to see what they had put in at the end. Okay I guess, kinda stupid.
very very very aweome movie, in my opinion thi sis the better of the exorcist movies, much better than the old school origninals and scariere and flows better than the exorcism of emily rose, very freaky and scary and well worth a watch if your an exorcist or horror in general fan
