The series begins with Dr Martin Ellingham struggling to cope with fatherhood, as he embarks on a new chapter of his career, which is set to take him away from the small Cornish village.
A new GP, Dr Di Dibbs and her husband Gavin have already moved into his old surgery. But Dr Ellingham begins to have serious doubts about the competence of Dr Dibbs and, after she collapses and leaves the village without a doctor, he becomes embroiled back to Portwenn life.
Martin also faces the loss of his Aunt Joan, and has to deal with a cantankerous relative who comes to live in Portwenn.
There are many questions that need to be answered in Series Five for both Martin and Louisa: how will they cope as working parents; can they bridge the gaps in their relationship and stay together and most pressing of all, when will they agree on what to call their son?
