This has to be one of the best BBC period dramas of recent years. It's sheer perfection - or at least, as close to perfection as a miniseries or movie is likely to get! It's actually a conglomeration of 3 Elizabeth Gaskell novels, one of which is Cranford.
The cast reads like a whos-who of British actors, and it doesn't fail to deliver. Judi Dench is wonderful, as are Imelda Staunton and Eileen Atkins. The costumes are simply delicious, and the script is well-crafted. In terms of the overall tone of the series, I would say it's somewhere in-between North and South and Wives and Daughters. It explores social issues much as N&S does, but it has the charm and beautiful countryside locations of W&D. It does a great job balancing light and dark.
If you're a fan of good period drama, buy the DVD! You won't regret it.
