"... the period drama of the year, and probably the series of the year." The Sunday Express. The hugely successful BBC classic drama adapted from Elizabeth Gaskell's three novels of small town gossip, secrets and romance. This witty and poignant story, starring the Oscar-winning Judi Dench, follows the small absurdities and major tragedies in the lives of the people of Cranford, as they are beseiged by forces that they can't withstand. Cranford in the 1840's is a small northern English town on the cusp of change. ABC TV Broadcast Feb 09 Staring Judy Dench, ABC TV Broadcast Feb 09 Emmy-Award Winner, Best Supporting Actress Eleen Atkins.
This has to be one of the best BBC period dramas of recent years. It's sheer perfection - or at least, as close to perfection as a miniseries or movie is likely to get! It's actually a conglomeration of 3 Elizabeth Gaskell novels, one of which is Cranford.
The cast reads like a whos-who of British actors, and it doesn't fail to deliver. Judi Dench is wonderful, as are Imelda Staunton and Eileen Atkins. The costumes are simply delicious, and the script is well-crafted. In terms of the overall tone of the series, I would say it's somewhere in-between North and South and Wives and Daughters. It explores social issues much as N&S does, but it has the charm and beautiful countryside locations of W&D. It does a great job balancing light and dark.
