When Claire learns that she is five months pregnant at the tender age of 17, she decides to give birth anonymously. She finds refuge with Madame Melikian, an embroiderer for haute couture designers. And, day by day, stitch by stitch, as Claire's belly grows rounder, the threads of embroidery create a filial bond between them.
A beautiful, lyrical film with impressive performances from the two leads, Lola Naymark (Monsieur Ibrahim) and Ariane Ascaride (Marie-Jo et ses 2 Amours, Marius et Jeannette).

One of my favourite films! It is visually stunning, especially the close-up scenes of the two main characters working on their jewelled lace creations for a major French fashion-house. The various strands in the plot are woven together by light and colour as much as by narrative: the camera caresses the young girl's thick auburn hair, catches leaves in the autumn sunlight, and lingers on the colours and sparkles in the lacework, binding them together in the mind. Characters and their relationships are finely drawn and well-developed.
Although the film has sequences that are quiet and dreamlike, its pace varies so it is never dull. It opens with an almost mundane (but beautifully-photographed) scene of a girl digging cabbages; then gathers pace as the mood changes from carefree fun to unexpected drama and tragedy - and then, ultimately, reconciliation and joy.
