A comic series of short vignettes built on one another to create a cumulative effect, as the characters discuss things as diverse as caffeine popsicles, Paris in the '20s, and the use of nicotine as an insecticide--all the while sitting around sipping coffee and smoking cigarettes. As director Jim Jarmusch delves into the normal pace of our world from an extraordinary angle, he shows just how absorbing the obsessions, joys and addictions of life can be, if truly observed.

This is a great movie, Jarmusch has made a lot of these that have never been released. Starring an assortment of misfits and actors, singers and famous people, coffee and cigarettes is told in seperate story format, revolved around people drinking coffee and smoking cigarettes, The white stripes make an appearance, as well as legends such as Iggy Pop, Tom Waits, Steve Bucsemi and Bill Murray, if you love Jarmuschs other films which are yes mostly black and white and "boring" (to the cinematically ignorant) you will love this too

A movie composed of episodes about coffee and cigarettes. Some of the episodes are better than others, many feel incomplete and the overall impact is unsatisfying because there is no real identification point. Just as one starts to get a feel for a set of characters they are whisked away and replaced with a new set. There are incidental pleasures to be had, but they aren't enough.

Jim Jamursch's 'Coffee and Cigarettes' is what you'd expect from the director, a dull, pretentious film with next to no plot, and appearances by great actors (Bill Murray, Steve Buscemi) and cult personalities (Tom Waits, Iggy Pop) whose talents are completely wasted in a series of brief segments revolving around, as you'd guess, coffee and cigarettes (how Parisian). Most of the scenes in the film feel like out-takes from the equally insipid Blue in the Face, which actually featured an appearance by Jamursch. Could have been a little less obvious Jimbo.
