The reason this film is so regularly referred to as the greatest film of all time is that it truly fits the bill. The debonair but jaded Rick (Bogart) and the luminescent Ilsa (Bergman) are the embodiment of an era. And then there are all those classic lines .....
A truly outstanding timeless romantic classic with just the right mix of everything.
Too many good things to list here but some of them are :
- Witty timeless lines.
- Ingrid Bergman is simply breathtakingly beautiful. That face can launch a thousand ships. Definitely a woman worth sticking one’s neck out for. :-)
- Bogart as Rick, is the epitome tough guy / cool dude combo. I’m sure every dude out there would like to have his aura/charisma.
- And the music, who can ever forget that memorable tune?
In World War II Casablanca, Rick Blaine, exiled American and former freedom fighter, runs the most popular nightspot in town. The cynical lone wolf Blaine comes into the possession of two valuable letters of transit. When Nazi Major Strasser arrives in Casablanca, the sycophantic police Captain Renault does what he can to please him, including detaining Czech underground leader Victor Laszlo. Much to Rick's surprise, Lazslo arrives with Ilsa, Rick's one time love. Rick is very bitter towards Ilsa, who ran out on him in Paris, but when he learns she had good reason to, they plan to run off together again using the letters of transit. Well, that was their original plan....
Becall and Bogart are briliant in this classic film about wartime lovers seperated by circumstance. While this film is presented in previews as a long walk through personal history, this is more dramatic than it is an amble through happy times. The will they, won't they aspect culminates in the action filled final sequences, as Becall escapes the approaching nazis.
