With memorable performances from Nicolas Cage (Gone in 60 Seconds, Con Air, Leaving Las Vegas) and Penelope Cruz (Blow, All The Pretty Horses), acclaimed director John Madden (Shakespeare In Love) creates breathtaking imagery set amid the Italian occupation of Greece during World War II! When Captain Antonio Corelli (Cage), and his Italian army company arrive on the unspoiled Greek Island of Cephallonia, strong-willed young Pelagia (Cruz) and the other villagers meet these uninvited guests with resentment. But as the Italians' charm and passion for life win their acceptance, Pelagia and Corelli begin to develop a bond that transcends the divisions of nationality and circumstance! Then, as the harsh reality of war ultimately crashes upon the idyllic shores of Cephallonia, Capt. Corelli must face the possibility of leaving the island...and losing the woman he has come to love! Also featuring Christian Bale (Shaft) and John Hurt (Crime and Punishment) --- you'll agree with critics everywhere who have cheered this winning adaptation of Louis de Bernieres' best-selling novel!

One of my favourite movies of all time. A wonderful blend of comedy and tragedy, "Captain Corelli's Mandolin" examines what happens when the enemy comes to stay. Pelagia is the daughter of the local doctor on a small Greek island. During the course of the Second World War, the island plays host to several Italian and German soldiers, and the villagers are forced to put them up in their homes. Captain Corelli (Cage) is billeted with Pelagia (Cruz) and her father, and his affection for music soon endears him to them both. But despite the friendships - and even romances - which begin to blossom between the invaders and some of the invade-ees, there is, after all, a war on, and very soon loyalties will be tested, and the soldiers will be forced to make a terrible decision....
A beautiful story, with perfect casting and script, not to mention breathtaking scenery. Above all a commentary on the futility of war and the strength of love and loyalty in the face of overwhelming terror and pain, this is definitely a keeper.
This is a fantastic movie. Beautiful setting, script and characters.... until Nicolas Cage is introduced. This movie would have been a masterpiece if the role of Captain Corelli was cast because he was suitable for the role, not for Hollywood appeal. Penelope Cruz is a delight as is Christian Bale (his accent is most convincing). Romance is on the menu - more for the females this one. But still a good movie to watch with your bloke so he can pick up some tricks. Have not read the book of it yet, but it is on my list. Overall pleasant, if not a little long.
