Director Terry Gilliam, who brought his magical storytelling talents to such films as Time Bandits and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, sets his sights on the Brothers Grimm, turning their life into a playfully grim fairy tale all its own.
Set in early 18th century French-occupied Germany, The Brothers Grimm stars Matt Damon as Will Grimm and Heath Ledger as Jake Grimm, siblings who travel the countryside as snake-oil salesmen, convincing unsuspecting towns that they are haunted and agreeing to get rid of the demons--for a price. In the meantime, they set their tales down in writing, creating a wealth of oddball, offbeat, and frightening characters. But after they are caught by General Delatombe (Jonathan Pryce) and his sidekick, Cavaldi (Peter Stormare), they are sent to the tiny village of Marbaden to solve the mysterious disappearance of a number of young girls, placing them in the middle of a fantasy world unlike any they'd ever invented.
They enlist the help of a peasant woman, Angelika (Lena Headey), and they set off for the evil forest to save the lives of the girls--and themselves. Gilliam has once again built a unique, entertaining land where anything can happen, and he throws in references to such Grimm tales as Little Red Riding Hood, Hansel and Gretel, Cinderella, Rapunzel, and the Frog Prince for good measure. The movie also features Mackenzie Crook and Richard Ridings as the Grimms' cohorts, Monica Bellucci as the Mirror Queen, and Julian Bleach and Bruce McEwan as two of Cavaldi's henchmen.

Obviously many of the past reviewers aren't that familiar with the real works of the Brothers Grimm. Just the glossed over, family adapted Disney and other takes. I say this as a few were surprised by the darkness of this movie, the true tales were quite dark, so it should come as no surprise that a movie attempting to tell the story of the writers would be a dark tale.
Given the M rating, this movie isn't really aimed as a children's movie, and it isn't one.
Heath Ledger and Matt Damon, what poor choices for the literary greats. This movie failed to impress me in the slightest. A shame as the premise had enticed me and I had hoped for something to add to the DVD collection. This, however, did no such thing.
This movie was a real let down. I believe that I almost literally fell asleep during it. Matt Damon and Heath Ledger star in this movie, and with such an A-list cast you would have believed it to be a better movie. I was quite disappointed that I spent money on a movie ticket to see this movie so I would not really recommend that you buy it on dvd.
A perfectly adequate movie.
Heath Ledger and Matt Damon both act very well. The story is quite dark and creepy and keeps you hooked until the end. The story at the start is quite funny about how they make their money, but much darker when it becomes real!
A good movie, I wouldn't recommend for kids though!
Surprisingly quite a dark tale. Even I was a little creeped out in time. I thought the plot was a little messy and complex in places but oddly enough can be still very entertaining. Not a childrens tale, dont even try! -you will give them nightmares. Ive even heard this movie as pshcyo-gore.. which seems pretty extreme but if you watch it you will see what I mean.
I quite enjoyed the Brothers Grimm, a fantasy tale of the infamous brothers who bought us so many fairy tales. The scripting does seem a little uneven, and there are a few surprises and scenes that probably weren't needed to further the story, but on the whole, there is some good acting going on, and some lovely scenery. Maybe one to get from the video shop though :-)
I didn't really like The Brother Grimm movie very much. I like Heath Ledger and Matt Damon's acting in another movies but I think they are not really good in this movie. I dont think i will watch it again in the future. I think The Brother Grimm will be great for some people who loves to watch fantasy movies.
this is a pretty bad movie, Gilliam really needs to go back to writting his own scripts and not trying to adapt this fairytale. The cast are all usually great but unfortunately the material just isnt here for them to deliver it, its good to see Lena Headey really amp up her Hollywood film career though
The Brothers Grimm is a beautiful looking but ultimately disappointing fantasy from visionary director Terry Gilliam. Visually its gorgeous but dramatically it is wildly uneven and the story never quite gels nor does the cast who all seem to be acting in different movies. A treat for the eyes though even if it ends up frustrating.
