a wonderful performance by the always enigmatic johnny depp. he plays a man who, rising from a troubled child hood, discovers that he can make a fortune dealing marijuana.. and does so to terrible circumstances. penelope cruz is wonderful as his creepy columbian wife. a deeply affecting movie
Pretty long film that's based loosely on the real life story of a man who introduced cocaine to the streets of America. Has a rags to riches to rags line to it, as they become mega rich, only to be busted by the cops and lose it all. Johnny Depp plays the lead part well and Paul Reuben is also pretty good in his role. Movie can drag on a little at times though.
This film is far from perfect but it certainly is a time capsule of the 70's annd 80's growth of cocaine culture in the US and the story of one man who played a key role in it's spread. Johnny Depp is fabulous in the lead role as George Jung and the supporting cast is solid, with the possible exception of Penelope Cruz who is ok but probably the weakest performer in the movie.
The story follows the unlikely rise of a middle class kid from the east coast who moves to California in 1968 and begins to make easy money dealing pot. The growing drug culture coincides with his meteroric rise and incredible wealth. Like all morality tales the guy falls just as quickly as he rose and winds up with shattered family relationships and in prison.
Well written and plotted, the film moves briskly through 2 decades of George Jung's life without feeling choppy and the story is always intriguing.
Blow is based on the real life drug dealer George Jung who introduced cocaine to the west coast of America. The film is very well made and is a great film to watch. Depp as usual puts in a brilliant performaice which is beautifully backed by equally good performances from Penelope Cruz and Ray Lolita. If there is ever a film made about Jung that is better than this it would have to be a new kind of brilliance. This is a cleverly and meticulously crafted film that deserves a watch.
A little different then what I was expecting, but not in a bad way. Johnny Deep does a fantastic job protraying the rise and fall of a cocaine dealer, although the movie is long, as it covers a large span of time, it is beautifully set and well played out. More a movie that would interest a person interested in the history of this true story.
This is a really enjoyable film, not so much for the story which I’m sure has been done before but for the acting of Johnny Depp which in this case is not his usual over the top but balanced perfectly with the script. It’s all about drugs and drug culture and seeing the development from small time to big time and all the ins and outs is particularly interesting because we get to see Depp portray the development flawlessly.
This is a really good film, i think anything Jhonny Debt is in, has to be good. And this film definaly is, this is a A+ peice of film. it has a greta storyline that is aciotn packed and full of drama. I recommend this to anyone who loves Johnny Debt as this is truly one of his best acts, ten out of ten for this one!
Definately not an irritating movie, it is well structured and is guaranteed to keep you watching. Still I suppose that not all people find movies on the history of drug culture interesting, and the facts are compounded in the interests of the story (limited screen time, and a long span of time to cover!). Really strong performances throughout leave you in sympathy with the main character.
True story about the rise and fall of a cocaine dealer who was amonst the first to realise the drug's potential. A somewhat soapy historical drama that spans several decades and despite a strong performance from Johnny Depp is really rather irritating and grating and it does drag on. Plus none of the characters are very sympathetic.
