'Angels & Demons' -the movie.
"Based on a novel by Dan Brown" is, I suppose, the fine print that excuses the sanitization of the plot as it moves from page to screen. Gone are all the asides and intrigues around CERN, gone are the entertaining machinations of the media crew, gone is the fearsome and almost unstoppable Hassassin, gone is the sexual interplay between Langdon and Vetra, gone is the amusing fuss created whenever Vetra encountered members of the stuffy Vatican Swiss Guard wearing only 'Pantalon'!
Dan Brown and Ron Howard must have been flamed so much over the Da Vinci Code's treatment of the Catholic Church that to compensate they have almost turned this film into promotional material for Catholicism. Every member of the Vatican heirarchy is wise, pious and burning with zeal. Even the Camerlengo was now orphaned when his Irish(!) father was killed by a bomb planted by the UDF, a Protestant organisation.
What I assume is political correctness also sees the Hassassin reduced to a Caucasian gun for hire, albeit at a sort of Jason Bourne level, rather than an Arab having ancient ties to the Illuminati and hatred of the Roman Church. Again the sexual element is missing, he's not goading Langdon with his lust for Ms Vetra and Langdon doesn't have to rescue her. Indeed Dr Vetra might as well have stayed in CERN and just faxed the details of the cannister for all the contribution her character makes to the movie.
It's still a good chase through the artworks and architecture of Rome, which is the core of Brown's brilliant novel and Tom Hanks puts in another fine performance as Langdon, letting you almost see how fast the cogs are turning as he figures out another clue but, as the plot diverges further and further from the book and the ending becomes more and more rushed, I began to lose interest. The assassin was gone, the Camerlango exposed, Ms Vetra was... around somewhere, Mr Langdon had humbly saved the day and, after a brief homily from the Great Elector, we could finally settle back for the climax... watching the adoring throngs welcoming a new Pope. Yay.
If you want a bit of a thriller and enjoy Tom Hanks then you'll probably be satisfied with this, if you expect the richness and detail of the original book then, like me, you probably won't.

As a follow-up movie from the Da Vinci Code, I was sceptical about seeing this movie. However, it was very much enjoyed, in fact probably more so than the Da Vinci Code. It was action packed, the main characters being completely believable and kept the audience on a thought provoking roller coaster ride as the main character played by Tom Hanks has a race on his hands to catch the kidnappers of members of the Catholic Church.

angels and demons was in my opinion a good movie that I thought was well written with a well thought out story line and a believable plot. The level of acting in this movie was of a good standard with all lines delivered in a well timed manner and it was this and the story lines as well as the interesting characters which made this movie enjoyable to watch.
If you enjoy a well made movie I think you will enjoy this movie and as such is recommended by me.
