Considered by many to be one of if not the most important Russian film-makers of the 20th Century Andrei Tarkovsky was a filmic visionary whose body of work stands as a realisation of his notion of 'sculpting in time'. This concept was characterised by extremely long takes and shots of indescribable beauty which simultaneously exposed the human condition and recognised the magnificent in the ordinary. Tarkovsky's unrivalled ability to capture what many take for granted amidst a creatively stifling political environment positioned him as one of the strongest advocates of Russian independent cinema. This set contains five of Tarkovsky's most renowned films as well as the documentary 'Directed by Andrei Tarkovsky'. Includes: Ivan's Childhood (1962) Andrei Rublev (1969) Solaris (1972) The Mirror (1975) Stalker (1979)

I don't why some pathetic drip has written a fake review in a fake language but the Tarkovsky films far surpass anything at all ever produced by a Western director. "Ivan's Childhood" and "The Mirror" would challenge a majority of viewers but seen in the historical context of C20th art as initiated by Dada and surrealism, Picasso, Braque, and the following movements of abstract expressionism and mid-sixties free-for-all conceptual art they are extraordinary pieces fusing art and film. They require a new kind of attention and mental participation by the viewer interested more in ideas than product and certainly not wanting cliche narrative or plot. Creative biography is reduced to a stunningly rudimentary level outside conventions and normalist tradition, although Ieven incorporating actual documentary footage of the siege of Leningrad (now St. Petersburg). These are films for persons intersted in film-making.
"Andrei Rublev" could not be more different as a "blockbuster" historical saga, except that again, Tarkovsky directs a film of great realism, anecdotal content, spectacular action and an expostion of historical accuracy in the 1400's along with a depiction of the inner struggles and vissitudes of the great Ikon painter Rublev. It is hard to credit some of the scenes and action as staged, especially for a film made in communist Russia in 1969. Rated by European Academy of Film and Television as 1 of 10 best films ever produced.
