The monoliths have been watching us. They gave us the evolutionary kick in the pants we needed to survive at the Dawn of Time. In 1999, we discovered a second monolith on the moon.. Now, in the year 2001, the S.S. Discovery and its crew, Captains Dave Bowman and Frank Poole, and their onboard computer, HAL 9000, must discover what alien force is watching us.

2001 is an utter masterpiece, a landmark in cinema, and far and away my favourite film, and it's about time it got a special edition, properly mastered and everything. The film looks and sounds fantastic so no complaints there. And the extras are very good too. A good making of film, several short pieces on the special effects, art design and so forth, and a commentary (of admittedly variable quality) with actors Keir Dullea and Gary Lockwood (each recorded separately unfortunately). Some very good extras, but the film is the key. Brilliant.
Nice to see this again after so many years. abosolutely amazing to see how this holds up for 1968 special FX - in fact the 1968 Oscars made a new category t of FX that year and this film won it, no contest. No CGi in those days - all models and painted backdrops but you just cannot tell - Kubrick was the man!
The story? Well, contentious for many at the time as it seemed just too weird, too 'out there', probably not so much these days as we're very used to visual weirdness. That section is really only the last 15 minutes anyway but wow, what a trip!
The visual enhancement is stunning - very beautifully rendered, grain free, looks awesome on a big flatscreen. The only issue I have is with the sound; I think they could have re-mastered that a bit better, seems compressed and flat in places - music only - speech,(what little there is in this film)is good and clear. Maybe the Blu-Ray will be better for this aspect?
Great extras - detailed making of with the FX of the dayplus bio on Stanley and what the future may have brought us. I'm 53 now, based on seeing this movie as a kid plus James Bond I fully expected to zipping around the moon by now and getting to work on my jet-pack, I've been robbed!
