Lost Planet 2 is a fun game, no doubt in that, but I found it to be a lacking production. Often I found myself lost in menus, confused on core elements of gameplay and swamped by its size.
The gameplay wasn’t horrible, but there wasn’t good explanation on how to play or use the game. For example, at the end of a chapter (that’s about 3 or so missions), you earn credits. Not once did the game mention credits or what they were meant to be used for. I found out later they can be used to buy upgraded weapons and abilities, but the player is never told how to do this. A positive on gameplay was how you could interact with the mechs (or as they’re called in the game, Vital Suits [VS]). You could take off weapons, attach weapons and customise “your ride.” Certain VSes could also transform. The player also had a tether type weapon which could be used to scale objects of any height, and I found myself wanting this in other games.
When I say I was swamped by the size of the game, I mean the numbers of available awards are seemingly endless. Both the PS3 and Xbox 360 have an award system built in. Even after finishing the game and playing several missions over, I had only collected 20% of these awards. Most games you’d expect to have collected 50 or so percent, without trying. Usually I’d be spurred on at this point to earn the remaining awards, however with 80% to go, I just didn’t want to go to the effort as the game wasn’t that good. To a lesser degree, I also found certain missions to take too long before a save point. For some, these points could be a positive, as an expansive game can equal many hours of play.
The one thing that sets this game aside in my mind is that Lost Planet 2 can be played entirely online, entirely in co-op split screen or entirely solo. Further more, a user can use any combination of these. This is the ultimate way to play, enabling you to include friends or family whenever.
Lost Planet 2 is a fun game, but it’s not one I’d rush back to play. Overall, it’s best brought at a cheap price or rented.

Don't believe the lukewarm reviews for this game. It is awesome. Complete capcom quality presentation and graphics with brilliant online play even with strangers from around the world. Haven't played solo and I understand the AI is very poor, but definitely don't hesitate if you have an online account as even with players from the USA and Europe, co-op was lag free and no dropouts were encountered in epic boss fights, speeding train levels and all the other craziness of the campaign.
