Japanese role-playing games (JRPGs) are said to separate the causal gamer from the truly committed gamer. So, it's refreshing to see Namco (America) and tri-Crescendo bringing Fragile Dreams: Farewell Ruins of the Moon to most casual of all consoles, the Wii.
Despite overtones of the survival genre (yes, you fight demons and other spirits) Fragile Dreams: Farewell Ruins of the Moon is rather more of an exploration effort than a fighting outing.
At heart, it's the story of a character called 'Seto' who must search through the environments rendered in 'Fragile' for a girl called Ren who could be a friend or a foe. Seto's quest is kicked off following the death of this beloved grandfather who the lonely young lad has to bury early on in the game.
While the search is the core of the game, its solving problems, uncovering mysteries and ? of course ? encountering and countering enemies who seek to bring an end to the journey. To achieve these ends Seto (and the player) must investigate artefacts and unearth stories that crop up along the way.
The Wii remote controls Seto's torch as well as doubling up as a weapon including a bow and arrow and a hatchet. Beyond the weapons the player (and Seto) also has access to a metal detector and a microphone that feeds into in-game speakers. Both of these enable the detection of yet more clues to be used in piecing together the journey and eventual arrival of Seto.

Fragile Dreams (simply titled "Fragile" in Japan) follows the story of a young boy, Seto, who finds himself alone in a post-apocalyptic setting. Having recently buried the old man he'd been staying with in a dilapidated observatory, he decides that he's tired of being alone and sets out on a journey to search for any other survivors.
Although this game's generally categorised as an RPG or a survival horror, it's not quite pinned down to either of those or any other genre. It is, however, an incredibly memorable experience that takes some common gaming tropes and twists them around a bit. The post-apocalyptic setting, for instance, is not the kind seen in a number of other games. This isn't a world that looks like it was destroyed so much as it looks like it was abandoned. The story itself is a little vague, instead focusing on the human drama and the emotional journey Seto undergoes. It's quite moving - and, at times, almost crushingly sad - but also funny and unexpected.
The gameplay itself is not amazing - most enemies can be dealt with by mashing the A button in the style of many action-adventure games - but just when it verges on feeling repetitive, a new area or a new character will completely reinvigorate your love for the game.
