Test Match cricket is an art form and a science combined - and it?s one that video games have struggled with. Not this time. Ashes Cricket 2009 places you at the forefront of the greatest of all Test series, and it does so with the skill of Graham Swan breaking a post-lunch ball through the gate; and with the panache of Ricky Ponting cover-driving for yet another century. Bat and bowl, set the field, and see the highly polished AI of the classy single-player experience discover your weaknesses as you probe for the same in the opposition. Like the real game, Ashes 2009 rewards practice, patience and flair as you learn the control system - it won?t take long to get to grips with, it will take time to master.
Playing as either Australia or the English and Welsh XI, you also get the chance to understand how the stars work. When bowling like Harminson or Jimmy Anderson, you have to tweak the controls to get the best from their particular actions. The same applies to batting like Hussey, Strauss and even Haurtiz. Don?t get too bogged down in the intricacies though - there are also one-dayers and the adrenalin-nuked 20/20 tournaments to play for truly rounded cricketing experience.
All up, Ashes 2009 is the game to take you through the high and lows of the nPower series - especially during those long, long rain delays.

1.0 out of 5 stars Have the makers of this game actually ever played cricket, 9 Aug 2009
By Mr. C. K. Hill "chizzckh" (Cambridge) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Ashes Cricket 09 (PS3) (Video Game)
This is my second review as I wanted to change my original score from 2 stars to 1. This time to simplify things I am going to break it down to simple good and bad points.
Good points:
1) Er its a new cricket game
2) Its on the Next Gen Console
3) mmm Struggling now, no cant think of anything more.
Bad Points:
1) Bad Graphics and generally NOT not anywhere near next gen.
2) The commentry sounds like they have played this game to much.
3) Completely unbalanced batting CPU A.I, they play everything like its a 20/20...test and 50 over
4) Because of point 3, no point playing test matches unless you want to have a low quality test nation bash you about at 10 an over in test cricket.
5) Only England and Australia have correct names, the rest of the nations have no correct details at all.
6) Sadly the England and Australia teams although by name are correct they look very little like their true life doubles, and even more funny is the that Bowlers like Anderson only manage to bowl around 70 mph so not accurate me thinks?
7) Bowling because of the extreme aggressive CPU batsman is no fun, no feel that you are bowling at anything but a computer who holds all the cards.
8) Annoying run outs, most of the wickets taken against the CPU is down to run outs for no reason.
9) Equally when its your turn to bat you can hit the bowlers out the park easily..10 - 20 an over in a test.
10) No long term challenge, game modes are the Ashes (obviously) but after playing 10 minutes you wont want too play that, 50 over and 20 over you can only play from QTR finals in a made up tournament. No World Cup, County matches or test series..tours etc etc
11) No stats can be carried from match to match, cricket is all about stats so why did they leave this out..DOH??
12) You dont care about the pitch as it their is no obvious change to what you bowl as it all looks gun barrel straight, if you manage too carry on playing this to bat two innnings each it will all be over in two days because of the stupid batting A.I.
13) God awful catching system, has no pattern and you spend 99% of the time dropping everything just to make you want to smash this game to bits even more.
14) Enough this game is the worst cricket game yet, at least the early games can at least say they had no one to learn from other mistakes.. WHY WHY OH WHY should we have to pay so much money for this ...@@@@

2.0 out of 5 stars A cricket game that promises so much and delivers so little, 11 Aug 2009
By Dave (South Yorkshire) - See all my reviews
Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Ashes Cricket 09 (PS3) (Video Game)
This game is disappointing and at some points becomes unplayable. I am a massive cricket fan and if the game was half way decent I would be raving about it, but it just isn't good enough.
The batting, although seemingly good on the surface, lacks the depth and realism required for a test match and has lost some of the enjoyment of a 20/20 slog. There are some good ideas, like able to specify a front foot or back shot, yet the implementation has been poor. You definetly get the feeling that none of the developers have ever picked up a cricket bat
