The Spalding Method to spelling and reading has benefitted my students significantly. It provides a systemtatic, structured approach to spelling and reading that makes sense to students. It does require students to have reasonable auditory memory as the phonograms (chunks of letters relating to a sound, eg. 'ow') are presented orally with a visual cue. The spelling wordlist is useful as it covers frequently used words. I love the program as it teaches chidlren valuable phonemic awareness skills such as breaking words into syllables, sounds and helpful spelling rules.
Best used with attendance at a Spalding course or WRAP course in Melbourne.

I had heard about this program 10 years ago when my sister was in primary school. It wasn't until my 3 nearly 4 year old boy was really getting into letter recognition this year that I thought I'd 'sus out this spalding thing'. I borrowed the 3rd edition from our local library and was very happy with what I read, all very simple and logical yet appealing to a 'higher order of thinking' (yet not beyond little ones) so much so I bought a copy. A clear, concise directive written in "lay man's" terms. Easy to understand for parents and teachers unfamiliar or new to "spalding" explaining the holistic language arts approach/ phonics program. A recommended read. A very good start to literacy (or a great tool to start with if everything else you have tried isn't working - from what i have read).
