Reviews

Gr 4-8‘A combination of live action, graphics, animation, puppetry, and humor make this series an excellent instructional medium. Adult "newscast" hosts Ellen and Sam introduce a variety of "guests" including a magician, a complete skeleton, a skin mite, a journey through the circulatory system aboard the SS Hemoglobin, and an in-depth look into the function of the eye. Viewers learn facts about the skin, bones, muscles, circulatory system, and the eye in an entertaining manner in this well-crafted series. Actual clips of a beating heart, tricuspid and pulmonary valves, and valves in the veins are especially engaging. Each program includes footage of a "true story" accident or mishap that involves that particular body system. The first two programs are appropriate for the targeted age group, but The Heart Is a Lonely Thumper will appeal only to the younger age group due to the obviously contrived SS Hemoglobin. The scripts are well written, and the technical and audio aspects are excellent (except for a minor flaw of a lower sound level in the four "Interesting Facts" segments in A Vision to Behold). These programs will be excellent additions to science and health curriculums.-Kathy Dummer, Newcastle Middle School, WY
