About the Author

Kevin Van Tighem, a former superintendent at Banff National Park, has written more than 200 articles, stories and essays on conservation and wildlife which have garnered him many awards, including Western Magazine Awards, Outdoor Writers of Canada book and magazine awards and the Journey Award for Fiction. He is the author of Bears Without Fear (RMB 2013), The Homeward Wolf (RMB 2013) and Heart Waters: Sources of the Bow River (RMB 2015). His next book (to be published by RMB in 2017) will be a series of essays that reflect on the ecology, conservation history, missed opportunities and emerging possibilities of Alberta, a place that could have been about so much more than oil. He lives with his wife, Gail, in Canmore, Alberta. "Take the picture first; then worry about identification and safety later" is Dennis Schmidt's motto for photographing wildlife. Dennis met his wife Esther at a time in life when most people are beginning to anticipate a comfortable retirement. His pictures tell us clearly that he has both a concern for the cause of wildlife conservation and what is meant by "professional photography". Esther Schmidt's commitment to wildlife photography has been a life-long endeavor. She has travelled across Western Canada, with her husband Dennis, forging intimate relationships with the landscape and the wildlife it supports. She has been a full-time photographer for twenty years and the beauty in her images testifies to her love for working outdoors in the Rocky Mountains.
