At once a hopelessly romantic love story, a gripping adventure yarn and a fine piece of social anthropology, White Masai is a compulsive read. Whilst on holiday Corinne Hoffman fell in love with a Masai warrior. After overcoming all sorts of obstacles she moved into a tiny shack with him and his mother and spent four years in Kenya. Slowly but surely, the dream began to crumble. She eventually fled back home with her baby daughter. From wild animals through starvation to ritual mutilation, this is a book steeped in humanity and one that tells a fascinating tale.

I was actually very disappointed with this book. I was told so many good things about it and decided to read it for myself but I was hugely disappointed with it. Coming from South Asian culture, it always amazes me how some peope from other cultures can have such huge misconceptions of how difficult life outside their culture can be. Women especially keep placing themselves in these ridiculous situations and I found the whole thing rather irritating. I was going to watch the movie as well but I think I'll pass.
It's a gripping read, but Hofmann's writing style would have to be one of the poorest I've ever had the mispleasure of reading. If it wasn't for the awesomely gripping tale of her experiences in Kenya, I could not have read the book. But the content is amazing, and I could not help but admire her strength, devotion, and incredible independence. The way she overcomes all her adversities was truly inspirational. So if you have trouble reading her writing style, it is well worth continuing the book.
Thoroughly enjoyed this book and found towards the end I could not out it down as I wanted to know what happened. I found the ending a little disappointing in that it left me wanting to know a lot more abiout what happened afterwards, I now see there is another book being released in English shortly which I will be reading as soon as I can.
A new favourite! Definitely worth a read, not just for the one of a kind stories, but for the way it's been written as well. It's no wonder they made a movie out of this book!
Loved the fact that it didn't come across as snobby and that the tone was more matter of fact than condascending. Vivid descriptions also gave such clear pictures in my head of the situations in the book.
With all its trials and tribulations, this is a great story of finding love in the most unexpected places, and is a fascinating insight into the lives of two merged cultures.
I found this book to be one of those 'can't put down' stories. I was forever wanting to know what happens next ;o) Its a story where you cant help but imagine yourself being there, and wonder how you would deal with this new way of life.
Heartwarming and interesting, I recommend this book to anyone who needs a good novel to curl up with and immerse yourself in. Thumbs up!
The White Masai was a beautiful while horrifying story of a swiss woman who married a massai warrior and lived in a tribe in the jungles. She encountered things that we would never encounter and lived through happy and frightening experiences during her amalgamation into the tribe. It is insightful and wonderful to read
The White Massai
Absolutely wonderful story to read. It gives a real insight into a beautiful culture and a way of life unimaginable for unsuspecting westerners that have never been to Africa themselves. I found I could not put the book down and I was mesmerised into reading until deep in the night, because this page-turner really takes you through the troughs and peaks of Corinne’s life under the Kenyan sun (and rain!). A big thank you to Corinne for sharing her extraordinary story.
