Ruth is a truly exceptional Dragon. Intelligent, and with a good memory, he is the only dragon who always knows WHEN he is. A skill that comes in useful as he changes the course of PERN's history. Jaxom as his rider, has to show some exception skills just to keep up with Ruth, as he tries to keep his own adventures a secret from his warder as he learns to be a Lord Holder as well as a dragonrider.
This book seems much smaller than it is, I just flew through it (pun unintended), when I finally put it down, it felt like you feel after an enormous meal. Fully satisfied, fully sated, and wishing you could do it all over again tomorrow.

The White Dragon is my personal favourite out of the Pern series. It is a fantastically rich story with many layers and side stories. Jaxom is an unlikely sort of "hero" but he and Ruth (his dragon) make a great pair of protagonist for this memorable story.
I sometimes found it hard to recognise whether it was a dragon, fire-lizard or human speaking at times but as I got into the book, the voices became clearer.
A definite must read for fantasy lovers.

A boy and his dragon. A likely mutant of some sort dragon choose a boy to bond with. The dragon is white, and very small. The boy has to deal with the stigma of his runt dragon, and his own growing responsibilities as a member of the ruling class.
Taking part in Threadfall activities even if he shouldn't, he gets sick.
Taking time out to recover he learns about Pern's past and those there before them, because his mutant dragon has a very impressive time travel sense and skill.

My absolute favorite in all the Pern books by this author. Jaxom is the most human hero imaginable so human in his own self doubts and his blunders but so heroic in his acceptance of the conciquence of those acctions. Ruth the white dragon himself is the most special of all the dragons, not because he is the only white but because of who he is

When Jaxom broke tradition and rescued the White Dragon Ruth from his shell there were always going to be severe consequences for Pern. Jaxom sets in train a sequence of events that will change life on Pern forever... and for the better becuase it is the beginning of the end of thread. This book is my favourite of the Pern series. Jaxom is a great hero, and Ann McCaffrey deals with the callings of hold. weyr and growing up in an amazing fashion

Tradtionally Lords aren't allowed to become dragonriders. Sitting at a hatching a young lord is called to free a dragon from its egg. White and mutuated everyone thinks it will soon die. I love the strength of believing in a freindship so much that it breaks all barriers. I usually like female protagonists but this is great. he is a sensitive guy and the type of person everyone would like.
