In 1912 Broome was as much 'Asian' as 'Australian'. The town thrived on the hugely profitable, but extremely dangerous, pearl shell industry. It was a frontier town where racial tensions simmered. This is a gripping narrative that echoes with many of the same fears and hopes as society today.

The title does not do this novel/study justice. As a noval it is extremely well written, captures the mood, delves into the language, the characters and really sets the scene of for an entertaining yarn. Study in that this is real Australian history, a wild frontier. A brilliant study of the distain and exploitation of non whites. This should be mandatory reading for all Australians.
