This book quite disturbed this mother of three! The overall theme parallels the culture's view that sex is normal and 'okay' outside the confines of marriage. There is little mention of abstinence. There is a more overwhelming, deceptive push for kids to experiement with sex 'because it's fun and feels good.' It treats kids as though they're animals with no conscience to make the responsible choice to wait for marriage! Most disturbing are the suggestions in the chapters on STDs and birth control for children to visit clinics such as Planned Parenthood for counsel 'if they don't want to discuss this with their parents.' I am shocked that a book deliberately urges children to seek counsel in the very important area of sexuality from someone other than a parent and names a group that makes millions of dollars every year providing abortions. This is shameless! Sex outside of marriage results in broken bodies, minds and spirits. For books that discuss sex from God's perspective for 8-12 year olds, read Before I was Born and What's the Big Deal!
I'm a single Mom raising a 13th. year old boy. My son and I are very close and he feels comfortable talking with me knowing I will be honest with him. As a Mother I order this book for him and was very impress with the Arthur. I like to know what my son is reading so of course I took it as a Mom to read what he will be reading, wow. The Arthur tell it like it is. My son has s learning disable, so we sitting down reading together as a family. This is very interesting and would recommend this book to any parent(s) with boy(s).
Puberty can be a really confusing and embarrassing time. That's why it's great that you can check out a book like this. The author tells it like it is, presenting straightforward information about penis size and the development of reproductive organs, masturbation, sexual intercourse, AIDS and more. Cartoon art adds a good dose of humor, too. It is a great book for all teens and parents.
Why is my voice making such weird sounds? When will I be able to start shaving? Why do I keep getting pimples? What is a wet dream?
Your body has been behaving very strangely lately. You hardly know what to expect from one day to the next. Karen Gravelle, with some help from her two young advisors, Nick and Chava Castro, has written a down-to-earth and practical book that will help guide you through this confusing time in your life. What's Going On Down There? answers any questions you might have about puberty, from what it is and what it feels like, to what puberty is like for girls, to how to handle the sexual feelings you may be starting to experience. Robert Leighton's funny and informative cartoons ease the confusion and exasperation you might feel.
Part manual, part older brother, What's Going On Down There? will give you the facts you need to feel comfortable and confident about this new phase of your life.
Aided by two teenagers, Gravelle does for boys what she and her daughter did for girls in The Period Book (1996). As in the first book, the tone here is forthright without being sober or scary. Facts about puberty, sex, and sexually transmitted diseases, and also what happens to girls during puberty are presented clearly and completely, along with answers to an assortment of related questions. The authors also manage to slip in some counsel about wise decision making, though the emphasis is on information, not values. This is similar in scope to Paulette Bourgeois and Martin Wolfish's Changes in You & Me: A Book about Puberty, Mostly in Boys (1994), but it is much more thorough and contains a very detailed chapter on types of birth control, which Bourgeois and Wolfish barely mention. Teens looking for information about homosexuality will probably need to go elsewhere--to one of Thomas Ford's excellent books, perhaps--for a better discussion. Otherwise, this is a fine book, with lots of great cartoon artwork that adds fine comedy without compromising the importance of the subject.
