I first read this book 20 years ago, and I loved it then (although I kept my own mini-glossary of rabbit words and their meanings!). Now, as an adult, the story of these rabbits contains so many more layers, is so much more powerful, and made me shed many more tears at the last page. Add this to your "must read before I die" list.

General opinion here is that the only good rabbit is one on the other end of a shotgun, or in a pot. These ones I would let live, no problem. A quest story, with a little bit of environmentalism thrown in, a prophet, and a look at the politics of control, via your burrow fascism. This, of course, is all wrapped around a story that is designed to be accessible to children, to begin with.

This amazing book was made into a movie in 1978, a movie which lacked the depth of the Novel. Richard Adams novel of a band of rabbits, led by Hazel and his brother Fiver after Fiver has a premonition of disaster is a work of art. Moving, humbling, this novel is one that has remained with me since I first read it aged 12. Many rereads later it is still the masterpiece that gripped me then.
