Considered by many to the greatest novel ever written, Tolstoy's masterpiece is a story of family life set against the backdrop of war. The novel begins in 1805, in the crowded and gossip-filled rooms of a St Petersburg party, and follows the fortunes of the aristocratic Bolkonsky and Rostov families as Napoleon's armies sweep through Europe, culminating in the French invasion of Russia in 1812 and Napoleon's defeat. Tolstoy's vast novel takes in both the epic sweep of national events and the private experience of individuals, from the keen young soldier to Napoleon himself, and at the heart of it all, the complicated triangle of affection that binds his central characters.

Reviews
Brigg's 2006 translation of Tolstoy's old doorstop was paraded by critics, many of whom hailed it as the best rendition to date. This fine addition to Penguin's marvelous "Classics Deluxe" line includes the full text, chapter summaries, textual notes, character lists by family, maps, and more. It's a Russian lit (and Tolstoy head's) dream, especially at this price (the 2006 hardcover was $40). Copyright 2007 Reed Business Information.

Indeed a masterpiece! Traversing many years, through times of peace then the build-up into the war. Combines romance, adventure, politics and so much more into a great novel. It's a big book so may be daunting but fon't be scared off! It's so worthwhile and extremely educational for those who aren't familiar with Russia at that time and their communications with Napoleon. I felt like I'd watched an epic movie at completion...highly recommended!
