This is an excellent book for both novice and fairly advanced underwater photographers. Starting with a review of basic photography principles, it goes on to explain options for current underwater camera equipment and gives advice for both compact and DSLR users on how to best 'interpret' the underwater environment. I loved photographic examples showing how to paint the water different colours by using different shutter speeds. An excellent chapter covers temperate water photography for those not living near a coral reef and there are examples of professional photographers taking photos of the same subject to show the differences between different photographic styles. Although I have a fairly good grasp of land photography, I am new to the underwater world and this book is wonderful for giving helpful advice on how to minimise backscatter, how to use the nature of the underwater environment to create interesting compositions and most importantly, it also gives plenty of references (including websites) for further exploration. I'll be continually re-reading parts of this for years to come.
