This book of poems was my first Pablo Neruda experience, and it's fabulous. He has a fantastic way of expressing the most intimate ideas - "The wind came slaughtering butterflies" - and these poems invite you in to a rich and sensual world full of the pathos, joy and richnesss one expects of this well-loved South American poet. Merwin's translation is the classic, and Picasso's illustrations beautiful. This is a good place to start a Neruda collection.
