The Turn of the Screw is the classic ghost story for which Henry James is best remembered. Set in an English country house, it is a chilling tale of the supernatural told by a master of the genre. The Aspern Papers is a tale of Americans in Europe, a theme in which Henry James is at his most assured and accomplished. The author cleverly evokes the drama of the comedie humaine against the majestic setting of a Venetian palace.

Turn of the Screw marks an important point in the progression of the literary form of the ghost story.
The atmosphere is built up with care to create a suspenseful tale with a horrific climax. There are several 'high points' of horror inserted into the story, most notably the first instances in which the ghost of the former caregiver Quint is seen.
I did however feel that there were points at which the story dragged a little.
Recommended for people who appreciate more subtle, psychological horror.
This tale when I was much younger scared the hell out of me. Much older than my initial reading of the book, I now am persuading myself to read this book again. This book one of the many great great titles featured in the Wordsworth Classics series is definitely up there with all the great examples of literary refinement.
