The full range of Tudor society is represented, including lower- and middle-class clothing as well as the more sumptuous costumes from the courts of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. This book has a huge reputation among the Society for Creative Anachronism and other groups that recreate times gone by. Useful to the beginner, to the expert, this book has details, instructions and photographs to help you construct Tudor garments, and to understand the general fashion of the time. The fact it shows you patterning for undergarments, through to gowns of the Royal Courts is a major bonus for this book! It is a fantastic book!

This book is an amazing resource for anyone who is concerned with replicating fashion for re-enactments or stage, or who simply has an interest in historical clothing. The text is scholarly and well-researched, and is, in itself, a social history, with its detailed descriptions of how and where certain garments were worn. Resources illustrated include tomb carvings, contemporary portraits and drawings, and excerpts from documents. The photographs detailing certain areas of construction, assembling and wearing reproduction garments and accessories are invaluable. This is not a book for the novice sewer, but a dressmaker of average skill and experience in costuming should not be intimidated. It is also useful as a tool for teaching students of Shakespearean drama how to move in period, and the correct form of dress different characters might have worn according to status and occupation. Utterly fascinating, to anyone who loves this period, and fashion.

A must for any SCA-dian or anyone who wants to learn more and make Tudor outfits. This book not only goes into the history, the details of the fabric and uses, and the construction of the outfits. It has female and male outfits of both everyday and noble wear and gives the patterns!!!! I love it and am currently using it to make my very own Tudor gown. Can't wait till the next ball. Very valuable resource and a fantastic read :)

This book contains beautiful pictures of recreated costumes from the tudor period. It also provides useful information on fabric and colour selection and a few photos of portraits or period jewels. The line drawing patterns are a good reference for shapes of the pieces, though beginners to costume and sewing will likely not get as much use from this book as those who have more experience.
