An absolutely fantastic book. Brown's grasp of the English language is both broad and whimsical. He explains his craft - without giving too much away - in a way that's easy to understand and fun to read.
From the mnemonic techniques to the advice on such things as psychics and NLP, this book is a must for everyone.

Derren Brown is a physiological illusionist who fuses “Magic, Suggestion, Psychology, Misdirection and showmanship” to create the unique art that he is famous for.
In this book, Derren reveals mnemonic memory systems that greatly improve brain power and impress your friends! He also outlines the basics of hypnosis and explains how and why it works. Derren’s views and opinions are expressed in great depth and explains to us why we think the way we do. His humour and charm is sprinkled throughout all of the above, with witty comments and amusing life stories.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I will definitely read it again! I only wish more people knew Derren Brown as he is truly amazing. My mind has been greatly broadened from reading this book and changed the way I see the world.
Highly recommended!

Except the literal help to improve your memory, Derren Brown goes into the stories behind what he does. Which effects he thinks they have on how we think and the intelligent and reality of 'magic' and hypnotism. If you are an information-shark, wanting to know everything, this is a good guide into broadening your view. Except being intelligently and in-depth, it is written with Derren's natural wit and charm (at times you'll even laugh out loud). What brings it all together is the knowledge from one of the worlds foremost entertainers that is woven in his explanations and thoughts about what he does. Absolutely brilliant.

Still relatively unheard of in New Zealand, Derren Brown has rocked the UK with his techniques that he describes as a mix of "magic, suggestion, psychology, misdirection and showmanship", from performing simple, baffling magic tricks on television and on stage, to 'subverting' business professionals to commit what they thought was a real armed robbery in 'The Heist'.
This book is Derren's first book written for the general public and is an excellent read. Covering areas such as simple magic tricks, and techniques to improve your memory (which really do work!), to deeper areas such as mentalism, Neuro-linguistic programming, religion; the myths behind hypnotism, psychics and alternative medicines, Derren takes you on a journey through viewpoints and ideas that you may not have even considered before. Derren also offers some very funny anecdotes of his life and encounters with various people, which may seem a little off-track, but do offer a sense of insight into the man himself. If you're familiar with his TV shows, it's not hard to almost hear his voice in your head as you read along to it.
If you're expecting Derren to give away how he does his impressive tricks, this is not the book for you. He gives very little away, and this only adds to the intriguing nature of his skills and human susceptibility. But do read it if you're interested in Derren, the power of subconscious programming or simply gaining more perspectives about the world we live in. One can only hope that his dvds will appear on our shelves and that he makes his way to New Zealand sometime, because from reading this book and watching his shows, it would be an unmissable opportunity.
