Robin Nelson's careers have always kept her surrounded by books--as an elementary teacher, working at a publishing company, and now working as a school library media specialist. But her favorite job is writing books for kids. She has written many nonfiction books for children. She lives with her family in Minneapolis.
K-Gr 2-Functioning more as beginning readers than informational texts, these books provide cursory treatments of topics germane to childhood. Both feature historical and modern photographs of related technologies or activities on opposing pages so as to contrast the changes that time has brought. Students will be amused by many of them, such as the standard-issue schoolhouse slate and chalk being replaced by today's paper and pencil (School) and the comparison between playing jacks and video games (Toys). Additional tidbits about each topic are appended. The text acts primarily as descriptive captions for the pictures, which occupy two-thirds of each page, making the facts seem more like a somewhat random list than a unified narrative. This quibble aside, these attractive offerings enable even the youngest readers to learn independently about history, and will perhaps inspire further research and exploration.-Rosalyn Pierini, San Luis Obispo City-County Library, CA Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
