After homeschooling 8 sons over the past 18 years, I've finally found a reading tool that's really working! 6 of my sons have 'learning challenges' and the older 3 of these limped along and we did the best we could...enter Toe By Toe!! I now have 3 younger children doing it, was amazed to find I could easily distinguish their learning hiccups within a couple of pages and have noticed a significant improvement in their ability to 'sound out' and attack longer words. Number 7 son is a text book dyslexic and although this book is still a huge challenge for him, he is always happy to do it and his small steps (or should I say 'toes') have bought tears to my eyes!! And although people say it doesn't help spelling, I'm thrilled to report that, in our case, I've seen quite a change! So now I just need to talk my adult sons into doing it too!!
An excellent resource, and very user friendly. Suitable for parents and teacher aides working with children with dyslexia or reading/writing difficulties. Found it particularly good if used in conjunction with jolly phonics or similar phonemic program. Works progressively through the steps required enabling children to learn the skills necessary for reading and writing. Pupils gain confidence through their successes as they move through the program.
This is a practical and effective resource for teachers and parents with children of all ages who have difficulties with developing fluency and accuracy in reading. It provides step by step instructions for each level of the tuition course. Each lesson is conducted in a "drill" format, it may sound boring for kids, but I find the students really don't mind the repetition and find it rewarding when they are able to go onto the next level. It covers non-words and progresses to real words and multisyllabic words. Each drill takes kids about 3-5 mins, so it is a very quick and effective way of practising the necessary skills for decoding. Highly recommended!

I was asked to get this book by my childs school to help my nine year old who has been diagnosed with Dyslexia to help with reading. What a fabulous tool especially for a parent who has Dyslexia as the book is not only helping my child but I am learning at the same time.
This is an excellent resource to help children who are struggling to read. The focus is on teaching children how to decode (sound out). To ensure they do this properly, many of the words are nonwords. Using nonwords, children can't guess what the word is by looking at the first sound, but have to decode the whole word. It works! This isn't however a book that helps with spelling (encoding) so if this is an issue you may need to find another program to help with this - I use Alpha to Omega.
