TIME TO THINK – LISTENING TO IGNITE THE HUMAN MIND

Published in 1999 and reprinted each year to 2009

I was referred to this book by Nigel Marsh in his book [Observations of a very short man] – chapter on ‘Nancy Kline’.

Nancy Kline’s book –
‘TIME TO THINK – LISTENING TO IGNITE THE HUMAN MIND’
is an inspiration for those with a Positive Outlook on life. As a Quaker, Nancy Kline developed a ‘positive philosophical view of human nature’ [p 169]. Early in her career when observed that ‘everything we do depends for its quality on the thinking we do first’ [p15].

Throughout the book we are given guidelines on the nature and reality of THINKING. – The Ten Components of a THINKING ENVIRONMENT’ [P35]

The critical area in thinking is LISTENING WITHOUT INTERRUPTION [p37] Give people the opportunity to express THEIR ideas WITHOUT interruption and the QUALITY OF THINKING by the whole group will improve significantly [p39]

Part One develops the 10 Components of a THINKING ENVIRONMENT [p24-28]
This provides one with the ideas and the methods of putting these ideas into practice – a positive practical approach.

Part Two – Creating a Thinking environment.
1 – The Thinking Organisation
2 - A turn of your own – The Thinking Partnership –
By taking turns at LISTENING with another , both develop a greater awareness and participation in a common goal – incisive thinking soundly based in developed ideas.

Part Three – The Thinking Society
The incredible benefits that could arise from a world wide Thinking Community – not reacting and fighting without LISTENING.

Part Four – A Thinking Future
When a Thinking Population can develop their dreams of a FREE COOPERATING SOCIETY. Until we are free to think for ourselves our dreams are not free to unfold. ‘Now and then, the sheer beauty of the human mind at work sweeps me away’ [p240]

It would appear that power residing in the individual – wrongly developed – can result in despotism and control over others. A THINKING SOCIETY allowing and encouraging expression and thought throughout society could result in the awaking of dreams of a new and better society for the welfare of all.

This book could show us the way to develop our communities and society into THINKING communities and a way to lead the world out of the morass of disagreement and bloodshed which appears to have become the blight of modern society. Let us use this opportunity to change our world into a saner, safer and healthier place – to the benefit of present and future generations
