Richard Shames, a physician, and his wife, Karilee, a Ph.D.-prepared registered nurse, have written "a step-by-step approach to healing low thyroid," a condition they feel affects far more people than is generally recognized. In ten steps, the authors outline the different kinds of thyroid disease, its manifestations, how it can be diagnosed, and the variety of ways it can be treated. The style is very readable and includes Karilee's personal account of dealing with low thyroid. A number of appendixes (though they are not so named) collect information on topics discussed throughout the book a glossary of terms, resources, the kinds of tests, etc. The authors refer to numerous studies and other books that are included in both the notes for each chapter and in a "Further Reading" section. This book is very well researched and written and outlines a very clear program for dealing with the symptoms of thryroid dysfunction including fatigue, overweight, hair thinning, depression and sleep problens. The book starts with an explanation of how thyroid function affects general health and is related to many common complaints of women that, by themselves, do not seem big problems. But the overall effect is feeling unwell, tired and diffulty gaining weight that makes life miserable.
The program is explained clearly. It is practical and gives a lot of ideas for lifestyle changes and the rationale for them. The author explains hormones, natural treatments and dietary changes. I found it very helpful and liked the way it is set out as it takes you through the 10 steps with practical advice to follow. Very helpful for women over 40 with fatigue, weight gain, depression who want to find out if thryoid is a problem and what to do about it
