Reviews

'A boy. A war. The miracle of survival. In this intimate history of brutality and suffering, the Bornsteins, father and daughter, share the pain of loss, the gift of faith and, above all, the heartbreaking legacy of luck. No-one should have to read this book. Everyone should read this book. Excruciating, enlightening, unforgettable.' -- Clare Wright 'Enhanced by meticulous archival research, Bernstein's story unfolds in novelistic form...A moving memoir, an important witness to the capacity for human evil and resilience.' Publishers Weekly 'Sprinkled with Yiddish and appended by an informative afterword, captioned photos, and brief glossary, the first-person narrative is a tenderly wrought tribute to family, to hope, and to the miracles both can bring. A powerful memoir for the middle-grade set.' Booklist 'The chronicle of Bornstein's first 11 years parallels the experiences of many other surviving victims of the Final Solution. In today's world, it remains more important than ever to remember these survivors.' Kirkus Reviews 'Bornstein's account is an excellent addition to the middle school collections.' School Library Journal 'A compelling eye-witness story about the horrific consequences of racism and anti-Semitism. But also a tale of courage and resilience, of inspiring acts of kindness, of hope and renewal.' -- Arnold Zable 'Here is the unforgettable story of how a father's courageous wit, a mother's fierce love and a perfectly timed illness saved his life, and how others in his family dodged death at the hands of the Nazis. Working from his own recollections as well as interviews with relatives and survivors, Bornstein relates his shocking, heartbreaking and ultimately inspirational story.' Australian Jewish News 'A powerful first person narrative for young adult readers: an important, confronting, absorbing and well-written story. Highly recommended.' Reading Time 'As gripping as any holocaust related fiction for young readers, this true story with appropriate information on how the facts were verified is highly recommended for readers aged 10 or more.'
