If you are someone who likes Chinese language, you'll enjoy browsing through this book and finding interesting things like, for example....1000 of those ancient Chinese coins with the square hole in the center was a string of coins, hence 500 being half a string. It became slang to refer to someone not very bright by using the Chinese characters/words for "half a string", and likewise 250 coins being half of half a string, then a person referred to as quarter of a string was rather stupid. Because I collect ancient Chinese coins, this is extra interesting. The book is full of slang information like that.
However, although the vocabulary sections have words in characters,Pinyin, and English, about half of the book is Chinese runnihng conversation in characters only,on the left page, and the English conversation on the right-hand page.
It would therefore be most suitable for someone already with a basic knowledge of characters. For anyone who just likes Chinese language, even if not understanding one single character,I'd still recommend it for a better understanding of Chinese daily life. Just think how impressive it would be to a Chinese friend of yours to jokingly say that you are not a quarter string(of coins). The book is good fun.
